The Ministry of Defence has revealed it intends to sell Stonehouse Barracks in Durnford Street - which has been dubbed the 'spiritual home of the Royal Marines' and 3 Commando's headquarters.
In an announcement made today the MOD said: "The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is nearing the completion of an ambitious Estate Optimisation Strategy programme which will provide a plan for a smaller, but significantly better Defence Estate to meet the needs of the Armed Forces.
The barracks was largely run like a ship at sea – as it is today.
The term 'going ashore' or 'a run ashore' is still used by Royal Marines when they refer to leaving the site.
Royal Marines today say the navy is part of their "DNA".
